- During the school year, I can call or text a sister and in a matter of minutes we're cruising down back roads, windows down, radio up and Sonic drinks in the cup holders.
- During the school year, I can see my sisters every Sunday or Monday at chapter meeting. We talk about how we 'love' getting dressed up for meeting every week. But it's ritual and we take that seriously.
- During the school year, I can walk across campus and see at least five sisters. A wave, a smile or even a stop to talk can make my day in a matter of seconds.
- During the school year, I never have to worry about sitting alone at lunch or dinner because hey, we like to eat and there's always someone wanting a Chick-fil-a sandwich or crab ragoons.
- During the school year, the time between me needing a sister to talk to and talking to that sister is minutes, sometimes seconds. I can go to the library, the cafeteria, the food court or an apartment and have a listening ear.
- During the summer, I can call or text, mostly text, a sister and we're trying to remember the last time we went to Sonic.
- During the summer, I see my sisters during chapter retreat in June and spend the entire day in casual attire. We talk about how our summers have been and how horribly long the month between chapter retreat and the beginning of school will be.
- During the summer, I can walk to the end of my driveway and wish I was back on campus.
- During the summer, I eat lunch with my grandma, my brother and the dogs and dinner with my family. Chick-fil-a is a treat on the weekends and crab ragoons are only if we have Chinese on Friday nights.
- During the summer, the time between me needing a sister to talk to and talking to that sister is a phone call going miles and a hope that the call is at the right time. The listening ear could possibly have to be a text conversation.
While at college, I can easily depend on sisters to help me through professors giving impossibly achievable homework assignments, exams that never seem to be studied enough for, essays always needing someone to write them and that pesky 'X' that can never seem to find himself.
In the summer, it's not so easy to depend on sisters because rather than minutes, miles separate us. Sure, I can meet up with a few who live nearby, 45 minutes nearby. But it's not the same as being in a room of a hundred ladies who would drop everything to be there for you.
Let's flip this; Miles into Minutes.
Does it seem sometimes that God is miles away rather than minutes, or seconds? Let's admit, the times we most desperately call on God is when we really, really need Him. And when we really, really need Him, we think He's so far away that we can't reach Him with even an knee-mail.
Psalm 34:18
"The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit."
We cry out to Him who is always near. He is as close as your next breath because He gives you your next breath. There's no judgment, no fee and no specific way you need to dress. Come as you are. His arms are open to comfort you. His ears are open to listen to you. his heart is open to love you.
Matthew 11:28
"Come to me all who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest."
