I would like to break this song down, using my own experiences to try and convey how much this song has impacted me.
I can hold my breath
I can bite my tongue
I can stay awake for days
If that's what you want
Be your number one
I can fake a smile
I can force a laugh
I can dance and play the part
If that's what you ask
Give you all I am
To me the beginning of this song shows that we all don't say what we need to say. We also don't say things we shouldn't say. We all have some amount of a people-pleaser in us all. I once pulled two all-nighters in a row because I my sister needed someone to be with her in the library one night and the second night I had a huge test the next day. The number one spot is always a goal for everyone. Whether it be in a job, a class, an organization or in someone's life. The most lied to question is the innocent "How are you?" How many times have you simply answered "Good" because you didn't want to cause more questions that you just didn't want to answer? The only person who sees us in all of our 'lives' is God. He sees how you are with your family, how you are with your friends, how you are around church members.
I can do it
I can do it
I can do it
This should be what you say to yourself every morning. 'Nuff said.
But I'm only human
And I bleed when I fall down
I'm only human
And I crash and I break down
Your words in my head, knives in my heart
You build me up and then I fall apart
I'm only human, yeah
We all need to remember that we are human. It has been proven 99.98% that humans make mistakes. You will fall. There will be that crash and burn where everyone seems to be roasting marshmallows instead of helping you put out the flames. Where the chorus says "Your words in my head, knives in my heart" I translate as myself talking to me. I am my worst bully. The words in my head are worse than any my peers have ever said. But then "You build me up," God is there to build me up because He speaks the truth. "And then I fall apart," we let ourselves listen to the world and become deaf to God's truth He speaks to us.
I can turn it on
Be a good machine
I can hold the weight of worlds
If that's what you need
Be your everything
Be a good machine
I can hold the weight of worlds
If that's what you need
Be your everything
The way you act around your family, the different way you act around your friends and of course we have to behave when the church ladies are watching. It is like we have switches for different personalities that we turn off and on depending on who we are around. This verse is like a call and answer. You are saying you can turn on the proper switch while God is telling you "I can hold the weight of worlds, If that's what you need, Be your everything." Read those last three words: Be Your Everything.
I can do it
I can do it
I'll get through it
I can do it
I'll get through it
Have you started saying this to yourself yet? Because you should be.
But I'm only human
And I bleed when I fall down
I'm only human
And I crash and I break down
Your words in my head, knives in my heart
You build me up and then I fall apart
I'm only human, yeah
Again, this is the chorus. therefore you would think it has the same meaning. Think again. Blood is what keeps us alive. It is a sign that you are alive and you can feel. It also binds those close at heart. Jesus bled for you. He was human. Just like you. Think about it. Jesus fell when he was carrying the cross. He was crushed and broken. For you. People were throwing insults, rocks and anything else they could grasp. He was hurting. For you. His Heavenly Father turned away from Him. His heart was hurting. For you. Then He rose from the grave because in the end He builds you up no matter how many times you fall apart. And yes, you're only human.
I'm only human
I'm only human
Just a little human
I can take so much
Until I've had enough
I'm only human
Just a little human
I can take so much
Until I've had enough
You are human. Just a little human loved by a bigger God. You can take so much by yourself until you've had enough, then you call the Man Upstairs.
‘Cause I'm only human
And I bleed when I fall down
I'm only human
And I crash and I break down
Your words in my head, knives in my heart
You build me up and then I fall apart
‘Cause I'm only human, yeah
And I bleed when I fall down
I'm only human
And I crash and I break down
Your words in my head, knives in my heart
You build me up and then I fall apart
‘Cause I'm only human, yeah
