I Dare You...

We've all played Truth or Dare at some time in life. Most of the time this game is played at sleepovers, parties, summer camps, Family Game Nights, camping trips and even on college campuses. It's all fun and games until someone says...

"I Double Dog Dare You..."

or the dare that sends chills down my back still:

"I Triple Dog Dare You."

Once the "triples" come out, there is no going back. I think the most extreme dare I received was a double dog dare to run around the tent naked then jump into the pond. I easily got out of the dare by saying there were snakes in the pond. One day, someone is going to dare me to eat a whole jar of Nutella. And I would do that in a heartbeat without a double or triple dare.

I have recently started reading Anne of Green Gables. The chapter I just finished involved the main character, Anne, being dared to walk the ridgepole. Anne, not wanting to be "out dared" climbed up to the roof, balanced on the ridgepole and took a few steps. Anne has a huge imagination but she is unable to imagine what happens next...

"Then she swayed, lost her balance, stumbled, staggered, and fell, sliding down over the sun-baked roof and crashing off it through the tangle of Virginia creeper beneath--all before the dismayed circle below could give a simultaneous, terrified shriek."

One of my favorite things to do is take something that is common in life and turn it into a "devotional" of some sort. So how do Dares relate to God?

Let's ask a "What if..." question.
What if God dared you to do something? Would you do it?
Would you take the time out of your busy, busy, busy schedule to complete this dare?

Jesus says in Matthew 28:19, "Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit"

This sounds like to me a dare. But Jesus doesn't say "I dare you." He says "Go."

So, I dare you...
I dare you to smile at a stranger.
I double dog dare you to send an encouraging email to someone you don't ususally talk to.
I triple dog dare you to talk to one person about God.
